Choral music has a long connection to the Church. The first choral work ever existed was believed to be the Gregorian chant, unison plainsong sung in church services at the time of Pope Gregory I (590-640). By the end of the twelfth century, polyphonic music of independent vocal or instrumental lines heard simultaneously, were commonly found in churches. Choral music in the modern sense came into being in the fifteenth century, it was an era of fervent devotion: to the Blessed Virgin, the Mass and the Magnificat. Then in music history, nearly all great composers, Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven and many more, left great choral works.

The repertoire of a choral society will never be complete without a good selection of sacred music. Tonight's concert presents the classics and forever favourites, singing about faith, hope and love which are so much needed in Hong Kong now.

Ave Verum Corpus may be called the most famous choral work of Mozart. A tranquil meditation with devotional simplicity. Cesar Franck's Panis Angelicus, the angel's bread was made famous by renowned tenor soloists. Amongst the many different settings of Ave Maria that exist, the one by Bach-Gounod is the most serene.

Requiem mass forms a very important order of church music. Nearly all famous composers left a requiem mass. We present three sections of the requiem by three different composers: Lacrymosa by Mozart, Pie Jesu by Andrew Lloyd Weber and Libera Me by Faure. The sadness of passing away of one's beloved was followed by the joy of eternal liberation.

Mendelssohn was a child prodigy and prolific composer. Almost one-fourth of his works was choral. I Waited For The Lord from the Hymn of Praise, his second symphony, and Hear My Prayer, motet from Psalm 51 including the famous Wings Of The Dove clearly illustrate his richness of melodies.

Connection to the Church can also be seen in contemporary choral works. Song Of Praise, composed by Yu Chin-fu of Taiwan, portraits a vocalization by the Rukai Tribe, one of Taiwan's aboriginal tribes singing their praises to God. Credo, from the Gospel mass by the American composer Robert Ray, proclaims the core of the Christianity faith.

The second half of the concert is selections of the great oratorio of all times: Handel's Messiah. The centre theme of the oratorio is about the Messiah, his coming, his birth, his crucifixion and resurrection so that man can be redeemed from sin.
